Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT HAPPENS IN A FREE INTRO CALL?

The intro phone/video call (typically about 20 minutes) gives us a chance to explore your interest in seeking therapy, and answer any questions you may have about my background or approach. An intro call is not intended as therapy, but as an introduction that lets us begin to assess whether working together is a good fit.

WHAT HAPPENS IN AN INITIAL SESSION?

An initial session gives us an opportunity to explore working together. I will ask you what has brought you into therapy and will summarize and clarify to ensure I have a clear understanding of your circumstances. At the end of the session I'll give you feedback and make recommendations on how I think therapy could help you address the things you are concerned about. You are then free to decide if you'd like to embark on a course of therapy, or to take some time to consider whether therapy is right for you at this time.

An initial consultation for relationship counselling follows a similar format, but in a couples' session, it is the relationship (rather than the individuals that make up the relationship) that is the client we are exploring and getting to know.

If you'd like to schedule an initial session, you can use the confidential online scheduler to view and book upcoming openings.

WHAT'S YOUR APPROACH TO THERAPY?

I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy and I have consequently sought out training and experience with a variety of therapeutic modalities for both individual and couples' therapy. My emphasis is on creating a therapeutic relationship between us, a space where you feel heard, understood, and respected. With a strong therapeutic alliance as a foundation, I feel I have the skill set and experience to tailor a treatment approach that fits the needs of each individual client.

ARE COUNSELLING FEES COVERED BY MY EXTENDED HEALTH BENEFITS?

Since I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor, clients with Extended Health Benefits can apply to have fees reimbursed, according to the terms set out by their health benefits insurance carrier. Additionally, I am an affiliated provider with Arete Human Resources and an approved provider for the Dancer Transition Resource Centre; if you are eligible for coverage through one of these programs, you can ask to be referred specifically to me.

HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WAIT BEFORE I CAN GET AN APPOINTMENT?

It takes courage to reach out for help, and I try to be as responsive to that as possible. Because there are evening and weekend appointments available, a first session can usually be arranged within a few days. If you click through to my confidential online scheduler, you can view upcoming openings.

DO YOU WORK WITH CLIENTS OUTSIDE OF BC?

While I can continue to see clients who leave the province on a temporary basis (for school, work, or travel commitments), my scope of practice is limited to clients who are BC residents.

HOW LONG WOULD I ATTEND COUNSELLING?

The course that counselling takes depends on each client's individual situation and needs. We begin counselling with a thorough assessment, including assessing your goals and desired outcome for therapy. We then work together to design a treatment plan aimed at helping you achieve those goals.

WHAT'S THE REFERRAL PROCESS?

You can self-refer (you do not need a doctor's referral) and can book an initial consultation using the confidential online scheduler. If you would prefer to have an intro call with me first, please send me an email to arrange that.

If you have a question that was not answered on this page, please send an email and submit your question.
